Netflix has certainly benefited from nation-wide stay-at-home orders, drawing millions of Americans to its platform to stream entertainment while confined. And while screen-time limits by parents may seem like a moot point at this time, Netflix is rolling out easier, more expansive parental controls to help monitor their kids’ TV addictions.
Previously, Netflix had allowed adults to require a PIN to be entered to watch certain programs, but curious kids could still see the titles and synopses for those restricted shows. The streaming giant allows parents to completely block such titles from showing up on their kids’ profiles.
Other new parental control features include a PIN that can be placed on any individual profile to prevent kids from entering an area. In other words, if a curious youngster wanted to sneak a peek at their mom’s unrestricted Netflix selections, he could be blocked by a password. Additionally, Netflix is making it easier for parents to see their children’s history, to keep track of what they’re watching and when they watched it. Parents also now have the ability to disable auto-play on their young one’s account.
“Choice and control have always been important for our members, especially parents,” Michelle Parsons, Netflix’s global product manager for kids programming, said in a statement. “We hope that these additional controls will help parents make the right choices for their families.”
To access profile-management settings and other parental control options, click “More” in the Netflix app or select “Manage Profiles” from the drop-down menu in a web browser.
The streaming giant has already received kudos from Stephen Balkman, the founder and CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute, which helps parents navigate the often free-range nature of the internet. “Netflix’s parental controls,” he said in a statement, “give parents and families the ability to shape the experience they want their kids to have on Netflix, and help keep them safe.”
